Ft Myers was incorporated with 349 residents in August, 1885. After that, their only schoolhouse burned down and the residents were not permitted any funds to rebuild. Instead, they were told to improve in caring for county property. They became angry and in May 1887, the town ceded from Monroe County. Thus, Lee County was established.
