It’s a problem known all too well by many women. That awful feeling of realizing you are having urinary tract issues. In fact, one in five women will experience urinary tract issues during their lifetime, and the bacteria that causes them is 10 times more common in women than men. Now, the results of an in vitro (conducted outside of a living organism) clinical trial, published in the August 2016 edition of the Journal of Functional Foods, may be able to provide some relief as well as answers. Results of the study indicated that the combination of whole organic cranberry powder and specific probiotic strains may actually aid in supporting urinary tract health.
The study was conducted by UAS LifeSciences, manufacturer of UP4 Probiotics, and Fruit d’Or Nutraceuticals, manufacturer of Cran Naturelle. It was performed with the collaboration of Complete Phytochemical Solutions and the Reed Research Group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, both well-known for their knowledge of plant bioactives.
“We are honored to have partnered with those at UW-Madison that specifically have expertise with cranberry proanthocyanidins (PACs), the active ingredient in cranberries for supporting urinary tract health,” states Dr. Greg Leyer, Chief Scientific Officer of UAS LifeSciences as well as one of the study’s authors. He adds, “The results of the study are very promising and confirm the synergy of the active ingredients. We are looking forward to moving on to human trials.”
The product studied was UP4 Women’s, a part of UAS LifeSciences’s line of award-winning probiotic supplements. It contains a mix of robust, acid and bile resistant probiotic strains found naturally in a healthy vaginal cavity (including their trademarked superstrain Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1) in addition to whole organic Cran Naturelle cranberry powder.
“Cran Naturelle was selected as the cranberry powder used in this formulation because of its superior quality. There is no other cranberry powder available with a higher concentration of PACs,” states Stephen Lukawski, Director of Sales and Business Development for Fruit d’Or, manufacturer of Cran Naturelle.
Based on this positive outcome, gold standard, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trials are planned.
